This is the Crib - it is cut from 2" and 1" clear maple stock. |
The first order of business is the lathe... |
Each spindle blank is ripped from 1x8 stock cut to length and then turned on the lathe |
Note the round tenon that will be insert into the railing top and bottom. I started with a handmade faceplate, but partway through I purchased the One-Way keyed chuck with several different sets of jaws - You will want one. |

After a while you get a pile of spindles. I learned the skew on this project, having never used a wood lathe before. I used a 3/4" open end wrench placed over the spinning wood to measure diameter - if it slides on easily you are there. After a while you can see when you make the right diameter. |
Next up are the railings, panel glue-ups, and frame for the end panels - all from 1x8 12ft clear maple stock. |
It sure is easy to cut that stuff up... These are the parts for one end of the crib - panel is glued up from the larger pieces, frame is assembled from the smaller pieces. |
This is the start of the glue-up. Cutting these panels on the shaper resulted in 16 cuts (8 per end) and covered my office in wood chips... |

Next up are the legs. These are definitely not using the plans provided - In fact the curve is taken from the stretcher of the cradle with a 'sleighbed' roll on top. At the time I had a very tiny benchtop bandsaw - I returned it to get a real one after I cut the legs with a sawzall on the edge of the bench. A SawZAll is a great tool, but is better for cutting up cars or making holes in walls... |

The Oscillating Spindle Sander saved the day here - it can mill wood and I used it to smooth the cuts until they were acceptable |
