This project started out with a standard plan, but all dimensions were impacted by using 2" maple stock for all parts... |
The first thing to do is make the patterns - cut out the plans and make full size templates from 1/8" panel. |
These are the major pieces roughed out on the bandsaw and ready for joining |
Isabella thinks the test fit is just fine on the sliding blind dovetails and lap joints that secure the legs to the rocker. |

The interlocking dovetails and lapjoints actually produce a solid structure with no glue... |
Here is the structure prior to the fitting of the seat. Notice that the sliding dovetails to be cut in the seat bottom will lock the entire structure in place... |
There are 2 metal fasteners - one under the tail to secure it to the seat, and one into the neck from the bottom to strengthen the dovetail joint. |
All assembled, glued, sanded and almost ready for finishing... |

Closeup of head - the resemblance to a chess set was the primary reason for choosing the 2" maple rendering. the original plans called for 1" maple in all areas. |
The stretcher slides at an angle into each rocker, and the legs are joined over it with a lap joint |
Here you can see the inside of the rear lap joint - these are cut on the table saw with stop blocks and dado heads - test fit as you go. |
This is the main support under the seat - it is joined to each of the legs with a blind sliding dovetail. Once this support is in place the angle of the front and back legs is fixed - hopefully matching the separation of the two leg supports and creating a single structure... |

The handles are turned on the lathe with tenons to insert into the head. |
The tail section is not joined with a dovetail - it is simply set on the seat and retained by glue and screws from below. |
After learning a lot about finishes I used a started with a coat of thinner to help the finish flow... |
Notice the grain come out and the light patches appear where the thinner did not flow - these are areas that will not take finish as easily and without preparation the finish will be very uneven. |
