Next is a coat of pre-stain sealer to help the wood take finish evenly. Notice that glue never takes finish, but I had to fill the ends of the sliding dovetails in order to get a smooth surface. The surface is now ready to take an even coat of whatever shade of urethane finish you want to use. Since it was time for Isabella to ride away on her horse, I finished it with a single coat of spar urethane and was quite pleased with the result - someday I'll have to turn it upside down and finish the bottom edges... Isabella actually got her rocking horse in October, but it seemed like we should include it in the Christmas celebration even if it was just a prop for the drum... Note Santa's milk and biscotti...

And the rocking horse is now Isabella's. Dad had fun with it when it was just a stack of 2" maple from Bolter Plywood over in Sommerville... Isabella thinks it's the best spot to ride side-saddle while watching her favorite TV show.
